Vienna was the Roman frontier outpost Vindobona on the Danube river. It guarded the empire from the Germanic tribes of the north. After the fall of Rome it became the Duchy of Austria and eventually the home of the Hapsburg dynasty.
It has served as the de facto capital of the Holy Roman Empire and then the Austro-Hungarian Empire into the early 20th century. With all of its power Vienna became a center of culture and to this day is considered the home of music.
All of this history with is its landmarks, museums, palaces and incredible architecture make Vienna a must see city.
