Athens was a major cultural center of the Mycenaean civilization around 1400 BC. It’s location to the sea made Athens a leading trade center for the Greek state in early 900 BC. In its infancy, the Acropolis afford Athens fortified protection against enemies. After the wars against Persian invasion ancient Greek entered into it’s Golden Age of Athenian Democracy bringing with it philosophy, drama, history-writing, artistry, and political reform. In 338 BC Macedonia conquered all of Greece until the Romans defeated them in 197 BC. Roman rule passed onto Byzantine rule and then Athens fell into decline during the middle ages. In 1458, it fell to the Ottoman Empire until Greece gained its independence in 1832. In 1834 Athens became the capitol of an independent Greece. In 1896 it hosted the first modern day Olympic games.

Currently only one major airport serves Athens. Opened in 2001 for the Olympics it replaced the old Hellenikon airport.
