Once a small Viking fishing village in the Gammel Strand Copenhagen became a region power and capital of Denmark in the 15th century. It was also the capital of the Kalmar Union during the Renaissance, ruling over all the Nordic countries. After the dissolution of the Union and then plague and fire of the 18th century it began a period of re-development. New construction and cultural development brought prosperity and peace until Nelson bombarded the city in the early 19th century.

In WW II it was occupied by German forces until it was liberated by British troops in 1945. Once again after the war, it has seen strong growth in its urban and cultural development. Denmark is considered one of the happiest countries in the world and a visit to Copenhagen should be a must.
